In December, 1918, one of the finest homes in Clifton Forge was purchased for a parsonage for the First Christian Church for the sum of $8,250.00. The home hosted many weddings and church functions over the years.

Reverend Long resided at the parsonage house along with his wife and children and made it their happy home during this time. Often working until late in the night, church member often reported seeing his study light on in the house while working on his famous sermons.
The parlor also acted as the “Marriage Room” and was a special place at the parsonage house. There, hundreds of couples were married over the decades. Mr Long performed nearly 2,000 marriages during his tenure at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Clifton Forge .
The “Marriage Room” provided an intimate setting for smaller weddings for church members. Additionally, many engaged couples would travel over from West Virginia where there was a required waiting period before saying, "I do". Once across state lines - Clifton Forge was the first place to obtain a marriage certificate. The Parsonage House was within walking distance of the court house where young couples left with their certificates in hand and nuptials in their future.
Just like the home, this page is still a work in progress. Please check again soon and we will have more information about the history. Thank you for your interest and support!
